Dinho, Ilha Grande, Brazil

2012

Wild-haired Dinho grew up in Brazil’s Amazon and Pantanal regions, and now owns the Jungle Lodge hostel on the idyllic Ilha Grande. He worked as a jungle guide for years and has a 14 year-old half-German son. He delighted us with his sunny outlook on life and his infectious smile.

What is your earliest childhood memory?

When I started school with Indians in the jungle in Amazonia. It was in the middle of nowhere – nothing but the jungle, kids and a school. I studied there for two years. I loved it.

Describe your perfect day.

A perfect day is a day that changes your future in some way. For example, the day I bought this house (the jungle lodge), or the day my son was born. Those are my perfect days.

What is your greatest love?

It has to be the planet.

If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?

George Bush so I could put my finger in his nose and throw my Haviana at him. Bob Marley, this is sure. And the architect who built the Great Pyramid – I’d like to ask him how he did it.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Patience. With, patience, I could win everything.
