Erin, Brisbane, Australia

2012

Erin, 27, from Brisbane, Australia lived in Spain for three years before embarking on a year-long trip around South America. We met her in Puerto Madryn where we were all couchsurfing with the wonderful Mariano. Together we stuffed ourselves with afternoon tea in mini-Wales in Gaiman, and took a trip to see the rather more spectacular real whales at Puerto Piramides.

If you could have a superpower what whole it be?

I know the ones I wouldn’t have. I wouldn’t want to look into the future as I would drive myself mental, forever second-guessing myself. And I wouldn’t want the power that goes with being able to read minds. Instead I’d like the ability to move objects because I’m ultimately quite lazy. I’d use it for good too though. Actually can I change it? I’d like the ability to produce fresh water.

If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?

My parents before they met each other and Bill Bryson. I’d like to be the female version of him. He’s so intelligent and articulate.

When where you happiest?

In retrospect, during my years in Barcelona where I taught English. I didn’t realise it at the time, but I was so free then. It was a spontaneous decision to stay and it worked out well.

What’s the love of your life?

Travel is what motivates me at the moment.

Describe your perfect day.

First off, I’d be a different, more talented person. I’d share an amazing brunch with good friends then do something awesome that normally scares me – like skydiving or rock climbing, and I’d do it really well. Then we’d have a picnic outside and explore lost locations – ones you couldn’t normally visit all in one day. For the evening, we’d hang out and be tired in the way you only can be when you’ve had an amazing day.

What’s your greatest fear?

Dying alone and with regret.

What trait to you most like in yourself and others?

I like it when people are afraid to do something but they do it anyway – courage. In myself,  I like that I’m optimistic.

What trait to you most dislike

I’m indecisive, and in others I don’t like selfishness, especially when people are self-obsessed.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Everything looks better in the morning.

Have you ever seen something you can’t explain?

Heaps of things about the world – I have a shocking lack of knowledge – like the stars and how the moon affects tides. Natural wonders amaze me.
