Mariano, Puerto Madryn, Argentina

2012

Mariano, 34, lives in Puerto Madryn where he works as an industrial engineer. He’s also a great musician and has a studio in his back garden where he records with his band and other local artists. We couchsurfed with him and were delighted by his kindness.

When we’re you happiest?

When I was young my dad was very strict. I really wanted a guitar and at 12 my Mum convinced him to let me have one. That was my happiest moment.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

There is a legend of Salamanca that says you could go and make a pact with the devil and have the power to do different things. I’d have the power to be able to play any musical instrument I wanted – and be able to seduce women.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My grandmother told me that when you start something you must remember three things: perseverance, humility and optimism. I always try to think of that.

What trait to you most like in yourself and others?

I am very adaptable and I like creativity in others.

What trait to you most dislike in yourself and others?

I don’t like intolerance in others, and in myself I am inconsistent. I change my mind a lot.

If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?

Che Guevara, Garcia Lorca and Silvio Rodriguez.

Describe your perfect day.

I’d wake up without feeling tired, eat good food, listen to music, read a good book, play music with friends, and at night we’d go to see a great show. I’d end it with a girl I loved.

Have you ever seen something you can’t explain?

I can’t understand how anyone can live without music. Music is magic for me.
